Applied Math: Same Math, Workplace Wrapper

Applied Math is the pure-math section's word-problem cousin. The arithmetic is the same — it's wrapped in pipes, tanks, crews, and invoices instead of abstract numbers. Most wrong answers come from the setup, not the arithmetic.

How This Differs from the Math Section

The Math section tests whether you can do arithmetic by hand — long multiplication, fraction addition, simple interest. Applied Math tests whether you can build the right equation from a sentence. Same underlying math, different skill.

Mechanical arithmetic

“What is 3/4 + 5/8?” Straightforward. You apply a rule. The equation is already set up for you.

Applied Math

Setup + arithmetic

“A 26 ft pipe is cut into 4 ft sections. How many sections?” You have to recognize this as division, then decide whether to round and which direction.
