Reading
On the real test you read a passage, then you answer after it is taken away. True or false from memory. Read this once.
Shop rule: tag a pipe before you cut it. Write the length, the room, and your initials. Do not cut unmarked pipe. If a tag is missing, stop and ask the lead.
Claim: you may cut unmarked pipe if you already know the length.
False. The rule is do not cut unmarked pipe. Knowing the length does not replace the tag. If the tag is missing, stop and ask the lead.
Math
Ratio and proportion. Shop numbers. Pencil and paper. No calculator.
A crew uses 3 gallons of primer for every 8 feet of pipe. How many gallons for 24 feet?
3 / 8 = x / 24. Cross-multiply: 8x = 72. x = 9. Nine gallons.
Check: 24 feet is three groups of 8 feet. Three groups times 3 gallons is 9 gallons.
Mechanical
Force and direction on a first-class lever. The fulcrum sits between the load and your hand.
The load sits closer to the fulcrum than your hand does. You push down. The load goes up. Your side of the plank is longer, so you use less force than the load weight. We will not print a mechanical-advantage number. Read the picture.
Figure Visualization
Folded paper. A real drawing. Words alone are not this skill.
A square sheet is folded once, right half over left half. A hole is punched through both layers near the top of the open edge. Unfold. Two holes. One near the top-left. One near the top-right. Mirror across the fold.
